  Magnaflow
Magnaflow (MF) was founded in 1981 and is a leading manufacturer of automotive exhaust components headquartered in Oceanside, California. MF currently has two manufacturing facilities (collectively, 240 employees and approximately 250,000 sq. ft) located in Oceanside, California and Lavonia, Georgia. MF also operates two distribution facilities (collectively, 130 employees and approximately 200,000 sq. ft) located in Oceanside, California and Budd Lake, New Jersey. In addition, MF has a second facility (60 employees and approximately 94,000 sq. ft) in Oceanside which houses the R&D Center, Returns and ECT, a subsidiary company that manufactures coated catalyst ceramics.
 
1. Manufacturing Team Internships  

This position is responsible for supporting the Manufacturing team with improvements for manufacturing processes, equipment, and tooling.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Maximizing efficiency by assisting with equipment layouts, workflow, assembly methods, and work force utilization
  • Determining components and tools required to achieve Manufacturing goals according to product specifications
  • Reviewing product development methods, and refining [processes to create a streamlined product development process
  • Reviewing individual products, processes, routings, BOMS, cycle times, and other measurements to increase capacity or reduce cost
  •  Performing review of processes to investigate the different possibilities of assembling, fabricating, bending, or welding parts by hand, robot, or machine operations 
  • Assignment of a specific project ,  from concept to completion
  • Presenting project at end of term to Management group

Required Skills:

  • Certificate  or Degree in progress a related engineering field
  • CAD Experience a plus
  • Able to work toward, and support the growth of the overall team.

Our R&D team of analytic architects, database developers and engineers work to understand and advance emerging technologies to invent the next wave of cutting-edge analytic data solutions.
 
1. KubeKit TIP Team  

Join a growing team that has for nearly 20 years been building an open source framework to automate the parallel installation and deployment of operating systems and clustered applications - stacki.com.

Project: This summer's project will be to enable and measure the effectiveness of Calico network policy to provide:

  • Host endpoint protection on bare metal hosts within a Stacki environment.
  • Kubernetes integration with the TD kubernetes configurator for ingress and egress.
  • Validation of host to container NetworkPolicy.

Background: Stacki is a bare-metal installation mechanism from power-on to ping and a prompt. Network policy is enforced with iptables. Calico allows for a higher abstraction of network policy for host endpoints (bare metal NICs) and for service endpoints in containers managed by Kubernetes. We would like to evaluate the efficacy of using Calico to secure host endpoints at the bare metal level and for use in a Kubernetes cluster. The current network policy for KubeKit by Teradata is flannel. We need to understand at what level Calico can and should be used to provide network policy on a Stacki cluster with Kubernetes.

You will need to:

  • Become familiar with the installation of a base Stacki install.
  • Create a "cart" for the deployment of Calico for host endpoints.
  • Evaluate KubeKit deployment with Calico as the Network Policy API.

Stretch Goal:
1. Evaluate Linkerd, Instio and others.
2. Create/deploy a service mesh cart dependent on 1.

2. Hybrid Cloud Open Source Integration Automation  

Project entails automating build, test verification and deployment for Teradata products in continuous integration environment. Potential Interns will develop software and scripts as part of the Teradata Hybrid Cloud Platform, Infrastructure as a Service team. The main focus will be to integrate build final OS open source components for all Teradata applications. Interns are expected to contribute build/test automation process by learning the current open source framework and creating scripts needed for automation process. 

Required Skills:

Knowledge of Unix, Linux operating systems
Knowledge of C/C++, Python, Javascript and other programming and scripting languages
Knowledge and/or understanding of open source automated build and test environments, tools and services available
Strong oral/written communication and teamworks skills

3. Stacki Internship- TIP  

Join a growing team that has for nearly 20 years been building an open source framework to automate the parallel installation and deployment of operating systems and clustered applications - stacki.com.

Project: This summer's project will be to develop a process to automatically configure and map an entire datacenter of unknown hardware on the fly, and to integrate that process into Stacki.

Background: Server-grade hardware contains a network interface which allows access to an onboard microprocessor.  This controller, called the BMC, has information about the rest of the machine as well as the ability to access certain functionality of the machine (such as powering on/off).

By querying the BMC we may understand the rest of the server's connectivity and capabilities, which would allow us to completely configure it remotely and automatically.  When this process is automated, you could deploy an entire rack (or an entire room) full of servers while starting with zero knowledge about the hardware other than it is plugged in.  As a stretch goal, once this mapping is completed, the next task is extending Stacki to be able to map a given host to a set of ports on one or more network switches.

Job Status Enhancement is a product enhancement that raises Teradata Database customer’s awareness of DSA (Backup/Archive and Restore Product) operations. The intern team (together with mentors) will be working on a real-time job status monitoring module which polls for the status of the database BAR operations and offers timely notifications. This key feature will be delivered to production systems, adding substantial operational value to high profile customers. There will be numerous opportunities to collaborate across Database, Filesystem and Client code bases.

Interns will gain hands on experience on Inter Process Communication mechanisms (Unix sockets, Message brokers, Shared Memory) in high throughput distributed and parallel processing systems. Delivering MVP of this enhancement will require educated design tradeoffs to achieve Consistency, Availability, and Performance. 1. Develop Database backend functionality of the enhancement that provides additional job status information for multi-hour running operations that does not require advanced experience with filesystem tools, stitching together logs from across nodes and components.

Nondestructive characterization (NDC) is applied to a wide range of problems from characterizing materials, parts, subassemblies and full up assemblies. Scale lengths range from micrometers to meters, materials range from hydrogen isotopes to plutonium, while densities range from mg to 20 grams. Applications include the characterization of inertial confinement fusion materials and targets, weapons materials and assemblies, and inspection of luggage and cargo for security. 2. Capsules Project Overview  

Additive manufacturing (AM) describes a host of fabrication technologies wherein a digital set of design and processing instructions are fed to a system that builds objects in a layer-by-layer fashion. Here at LLNL, we specialize in developing and improving novel AM systems that can fabricate architected materials with novel properties. Interns will work in a collaborative work environment and interface with both experimental and modeling experts that drive this technology forward. For the capsules project, interns will focus on designing and production of microcapsules, either through microfluidic manufacturing technique, or other advanced manufacturing techniques. The final materials typically have a core-shell structure. The core is the chemical that reacts with CO2, behaves as display (liquid crystal), or performs its designed function (cell). The shell is the material that isolates and protects the core. Interns may help on development of new manufacturing tools for mass production that can be commercialized.

Seeking 2-3 students from: Mechanical engineering, materials engineering, polymer science. Undergrad or Grad.

3. Modeling for Prediction to Modeling for Understand  

Whether it’s Chess, Go, or Jeopardy, artificial intelligence approaches are seemingly approaching super human capabilities. Even with this progress, however, AI approaches are not able to teach a human how to succeed at any of these games. This is because AI is not able to self-reflect on its decisions nor is it able to be held accountable. The goal of the project is to build techniques and methods to add introspective capabilities to AI with the goal of not making AI accountable and explainable. These range from simple debugger-like developer tools over new algorithms to log and inspect training and decision making to new explainable AI methods.

4. Porosity Modeling of Materials  

Porosity Modeling of Materials under Extreme Loading Conditions:

Ductile alloys fail due to porosity nucleation, growth, and coalescence. Predicting this behavior is critical for high-strain rate scenarios caused by lasers, explosions, and impacts.
This project seeks to characterize the effect of various porosity models on the response of (computationally) large impact problems.

Required Skills:

Students should have completed classes in continuum mechanics and nonlinear finite elements and have some familiarity with C++ programming and high-performance computing (HPC).

5. Projection Microstereolithography (PuSL) Project  

Additive manufacturing (AM) describes a host of fabrication technologies wherein a digital set of design and processing instructions are fed to a system that builds objects in a layer-by-layer fashion. Here at LLNL, we specialize in developing and improving novel AM systems that can fabricate architected materials with novel properties. Interns will work in a collaborative work environment and interface with both experimental and modeling experts that drive this technology forward. Projection microstereolithography (PuSL) is a technique we have developed to additively manufacture highly three-dimensional microscale structures. For the PµSL project, interns will design microstructure lattices, build structures with the PuSL apparatus, and perform mechanical testing. A detail oriented intern will execute systematic studies to optimize the PµSL process and part design. The intern will extract relationship trends between process parameters and mechanical testing data and be able to effectively communicate findings to the team.

6. Self-Organizing Collaborative Intelligence  

Most of the field of Artificial Intelligence is focused on classification and regression tasks and less work is focused on unsupervised learning. Even less work is focused on the unsupervised collaboration of multiple sensors and artificial intelligence approaches. This project aim at exactly that. Using information theoretic models, like Belief Propagation, the goal is to  optimize the collaboration of different AI and other sensor approaches under varying and even adversarial conditions. Applications include autonomous  control of drones, combination of sensory input for airport security or multimodal analysis of Internet videos.

7. Three-Dimensional Modeling Project Overview  

Additive manufacturing (AM) describes a host of fabrication technologies wherein a digital set of design and processing instructions are fed to a system that builds objects in a layer-by-layer fashion. Here at LLNL, we specialize in developing and improving novel AM systems that can fabricate architected materials with novel properties. Interns will work in a collaborative work environment and interface with both experimental and modeling experts that drive this technology forward. Computer models are the conduit to turn ideas into real three-dimensional objects. An intern skilled in CAD or Solidworks will work with engineers to design models, enabling materials with previously unachievable but desirable properties. Models will then be tested by the selected candidate via computer simulations and ultimately through additive manufacturing and mechanical testing. 

Seeking 2-3 students from: Mechanical engineering, materials engineering, chemical engineering.

Required Skills:

Students should have completed classes in dynamics, statistics, mechanics of materials, materials engineering and/or mechanical testing.

8. 3D Bioprinting of Tissue Microenviroments-TIP  

3D bioprinting brings life to traditional 3D printing—literally!  3D bioprinting executes a similar process to traditional 3D printing where human tissue constructs are fabricated in a layer-by-layer manner using living cells and biomaterials. Here at LLNL we use 3D bioprinting technology to create in vitro microphysiological platforms (e.g. tumor-on-chip systems, brain-on-chip) that aim to recapitulate human response to toxins or drugs. - Machine learning / AI: ​Develop the next generation of A.I algorithms that candetect and classify objects in an indoor environment. Improve the capability ofthe robot to detect humans, and other salient objects. For this internship, we are looking for students with knowledge and experience in classification and regression algorithms and different machine learning techniques (unsupervised, supervised, reinforcement, demonstration).

- Simulation environment: ​Create photorealistic simulations environments and pair those virtual environments with our robotic operating system. Train robots in a virtual environment and deploy new functionalities in the real world. ​For this internship, we are looking for students with development experience using 3D games engine, preferably Epic’s Unreal Engine 4.
