1.  IDEA Mentor Program

Roles and Responsibilities of a Mentor

  • Provide honest feedback. Direction on where to concentrate improvement to match expectations.
  • Advice/help with career guidance.
  • Serve as a role model, friend and confidante.
  • Provide a positive and supportive environment.
  • Serve as a liaison between student and department or other areas of the University when necessary.
  • Enhance opportunities for students' academic success.

Time commitment: Flexible, 1-2 hours per quarter

2.   IDEA Outreach & Recruitment Program

  • Serve as a Poster Session Judge during a Diversity Recruitment Conference.
  • Speak to Prospective Underrepresented Graduate Students at a Career/College Fair.
  • Present Overview of Engineering and the Jacobs School in a High School Classroom.
  • Participate in a Jacobs School Student Org, On-Campus Outreach Event, such as:
    • Enspire (300 middle-school students)
    • EnVision (1-200 middle-school girls)
    • MESA Day @ Jacobs (300 middle and high school students)
    • Girls Day Out (middle and high school girls)
  • Admissions Yield Activities
    • E-mail campaigns
    • Phone-a-thons

Time commitment: Average 1-2 hours for a local event, 3-4 hours for non-local events (excluding travel time)

3.   IDEA Student Org Mentoring and/or Advising

  • Jacobs School Diversity Organizations:
  • SWE
  • NSBE
  • SHPE
  • AISES
  • Women in ECE
  • Women in Computing

Time commitment: Flexible, 2-4 hours per quarter average

4.   IDEA Pre-Engineering Summer Program

A two-week, intensive residential academic program, offered at no cost, during the summer, to selected entering freshmen.

  • Program Goal: To give each student a strong academic foundation as well as to increase the expectation that the students will complete the engineering degree requirements.

  • Volunteer to open up the lab for student tours
  • Workshops describing what the research is about

Time commitment: 30-45 minutes per workshop.

5.   Jacobs School Diversity Advisory Activities

  • Diversity Advisory Council

  • The Diversity Advisory Council is a volunteer group of faculty, students and staff who advise the dean on the development of school-wide diversity and climate initiatives and resources.

  • Departmental Diversity Officer

  • Jacobs School Departmental Diversity Officers are department faculty representatives that are committed to recruiting diverse students. The Diversity Officers work to ensure that an equitable approach is followed within their respective departments/programs via the department Chairs and Admission Committees.
